CANDELABRA PRIMROSE Primula beesiana NATURALIZES IN MOIST SHADE SEEDS
DESCRIPTION
Common Name(s): Bee's primrose, candelabra primrose Botanical Name: Primula beesiana Type: Perennial Hardiness: US zones 4 to 9 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: High Bloom Color(s): Rose to mauve Bloom Period: Late spring to mid-summer Height: 18 to 24 inches Spacing: 18 inches Features: Showy blooms, shade tolerant Precautions: None known Description: This charming primrose species provides up to four weeks of outstanding color to shady areas of the garden. Plants produce thick rosettes of wrinkled light-green basal leaves in early spring. Tall, straight stems support loose whorls of rosy-red blooms from May to June. Plants will self-seed reliably in ideal conditions and spread to form small colonies planted in consistently moist soil. Also suitable for use in containers. Uses/Culture: Shady beds and borders, beautiful in mass, container gardens, edging for woodland beds, stream margins and wooded paths. Plants require protection from strong afternoon sun but can be planted successfully in full sun provided there is consistent moisture. They are not tolerant of heat and strongly resent periods of drought. Germination requirements: Germination occurs in 2-3 weeks under warm, (65-68F), moist conditions. If germination does not occur in 3-4 weeks, a 2-4 weeks period of cold stratification is recommended. Cover thinly or do not cover; light aids in germination.
