They are multi-stemmed in nature with a round, oval or irregular shape but are easily pruned for use as a small tree. Plants produce ovate, green leaves 2-5 inches in length which change to shades of yellow before being dispersed in the fall. The alternate botanical name, refers to the four-winged fruits which dangle from the branches in fall and persist on trees often through winter. Flowering occurs from April to May with pure white, bell-shaped blossoms dangling in loose clusters from every branch. The blooms glisten like small silver bells in the evening hours. Trees have a moderate growth rate during the first 5-7 years but grow slowly there after. In their native habitat they can eventually achieve a height of nearly 60 feet. Uses: Seasonal hedging or privacy screen, specimen planting, wildlife gardens, back of beds and borders. Plant in full sun to light shade with moist soil but well-draining for best performance. Halesia prefers a neutral to acidic soil and is resentful of alkaline soils, full shade and extended periods of drought, amend soil with several inches of sphagnum peat moss if needed. Skill Level: Difficult: Germination requires two successive cycles of 3m warm then 3m cold stratification.
