Plants are monocarpic, meaning they die-off after completing their bloom cycle, usually in about 15-20 years but not before reproducing. A. americana is among the fastest growing Agaves and will bloom in even less time provided it receives ample moisture and fertile soil. The flowering stalk produced can easily achieve the girth of a telephone pole and nearly the height. Blossoms are replaced by dozens of bulbous baby plants which are sent propelling to the ground as the mother plant dies back and the flowering stalk topples over. Uses/Culture: Excellent accent plant for difficult areas of the garden, dry, rocky outcroppings, specimen planting, large containers. Plants require full sun and good drainage for good performance. They are tolerant of both heat and periods of drought. Used in the landscape plants require sufficient consideration and respect; leaves are covered in sharp spines which can cause injury if brushed against; sap is known to cause severe skin reactions in some people and extreme care should be used to avoid direct contact; plants grow very large in ideal conditions and should be located at least ten feet or more from buildings, walkways, play areas, trees and other prized plants they may compete with. Germination requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm, moist conditions.
