DESCRIPTION

Common Name(s): Ferny corydalis, fern-leaved corydalis Botanical Name: Corydalis cheilanthifolia Cultivar: Manchu Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 3 to 8 Light Requirements: Partial to dappled shade Water Requirements: Moderate Bloom Colors: Yellow Bloom Period: Spring to summer Height: 12 to 18 inches Spacing: 12 to 18 inches Description: The ferny or fern-leaved Corydalis is a charming addition to shady borders or woodland spaces. The sunny yellow blooms on arching stems provide splashes of color to low-light areas as they are produced through the spring and summer months. The fern-like foliage emerges bronze, changes to green with maturity and takes on new hues as the season comes to a close. Plants are easy to grow from seed and self-seed reliably, making them a good candidate for naturalizing. They will spread to form colonies of plants over time, but are not known to be 'garden thugs' and are easy to remove should they pop up in an undesired location. Uses/Culture: Woodland beds and borders, containers, naturalizing. Plants require protection from strong afternoon sun. They grow best in soils rich in composted materials with consistent moisture but adequate drainage. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 3-5 weeks following a 6-8 week period of cold stratification. Ideal for fall sowing to a cold frame or unheated green house.
