These plants do best in full sun and well-drained soil. 2 Amend the soil in the area where the coneflowers are to be planted. Turn over the soil and add compost. 3 Sow seeds directly in the garden in the spring. The soil temperature should regularly be at least 55 degrees. Scatter the seeds over the flower bed and cover them with 1/4 inch of soil. 4 Water the coneflowers regularly.
