I remember learning years ago that in the distant past, Lapis Lazuli was used as pigment for paintings but was very expensive so only special paintings had bright blue, and this is why the virgin Mary is often depicted wearing bright blue as she was deemed to be special enough to warrant using this beautiful colour!
