Eugène Atget (1857-1927) was a French documentary photographer who is known especially for his evocative images of Paris. Between 1897 and his death in 1927 he worked on photographing architectural and cultural details of the city for his Old Paris collection, often capturing moods and views suffused with an intimate and meditative sensibility. He was mostly unknown during his life, and only began to reach wider acclaim after his death with the publication of several books of his work by the American photographer Berenice Abbott.
