Common Name(s): Prairie Smoke, Purple Avens Botanical Name: Geum triflorum Type: Herbaceous Perennial Hardiness: US zones 1 to 7 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: Low Bloom Colors: Mauve Bloom Period: Summer Height: 9 to 12 inches Spacing: 12 inches Features: Compact habit, showy blooms Precautions: None known Description: Nodding reddish-purple cup-shaped blooms occur in groups of one of more, most often in threes. Blooms give way to feathery silver and pink cotton-like fruits which persist on plants for several weeks after flowering and attribute to the name prairie smoke. Leaves are distinct from other geum species in that there are about 30 leaflets on each 6-inch long leaf. The entire plant is softly hairy. Plants are cold hardy as the winter snow. Uses/Culture: Performs best with full sun and moderately moist but well-drained soil. Good drainage is essential for success, particularly in areas with wet winters. Plants will tolerate light shade and perform best with afternoon shade in areas with hot summers. An interesting plant for edging and borders, also works well as a ground cover, in mass, wildflower, meadow or prairie gardens. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 3-4 weeks under warm, moist conditions. A 30-60 day period of cold stratification is recommended for most uniform results
