Plants form a flattened rosette of broad, ovate, wrinkled, coarsely toothed, green leaves. Slender, leafless flowering stems emerge in spring topped by cymes of 1-1/2 inch wide blooms with five light blue petals and a yellow center eye. The plant's substantial root system and fine pubescent covering on the leaves and flowering stems help it to obtain and maintain a water supply to overcome lengthy periods of drought. The common names refer to the plants ability to seemingly return from the dead and long periods without water given just the slightest drink. This charming alpine typically resides where spring run-off is prevalent along steep north-facing cliffs which ensures some early season moisture and protection from the sun during the hottest part of the day. Uses/Culture: Edging, mixed beds and borders, container gardens, rock and alpine gardens, rock walls, rocky slopes, fairy gardens. Plants grow best in moderately fertile, moist but, sharply-draining soils. Germination requirements: Germination occurs in 1-3 weeks under warm (68F), moist conditions; if germination does not occur in 3-4 weeks, refrigerate for 2-4 week then return to warmer temperatures. Warm, dry storage for a 6m duration improves germination results with this species. Seeds are very small and should be surface sown thinly and evenly.
