Tree Mallow (Rose Mallow) Seeds Also called Rose Mallow, this 4" hibiscus-like flower blooms on round-leaved plants in late season. This lovely mix includes various shades of pink and white. Plants form a large upright bush of heart-shaped grey-green leaves, bearing loads of white hibiscus like flowers with a pink blush, all summer long. This is actually a woody shrub, but is usually cut back hard each spring to a height of about 6 inches. In Zones 5 to 6 plants should be mulched for the winter. Gardeners in cold winter regions could consider this as an annual that flowers for the whole summer and fall. The plant attracts butterflies and bees. Zones: 3-10 Tree Mallow (Lavatera trimestris) also known as Rose Mallow, grows easily, rapidly and is a heavy producer of hybiscus-like flowers in shades of lavender pink and white. Blooms from summer to fall. Description: tall, bushy annual, 24-48 inches tall; has lovely, hibiscus-like flowers in shades of white, rose-pink and red; blooms in 65 days. POTTING: Any good, well-cultivated garden soil will be fine for the annual Rose Mallow to grow in. A sunny spot should also be chosen. Those that are grown in the greenhouse should have coarse, rich, porous soil in well-drained pots. When they have filled 6-8-inch pots with roots, they would benefit from weekly applications of dilute liquid fertilizer. The plants should be staked and neatly tied. Tree Mallows can grow in regular, well-drained garden soil in a sunny area. The shoots of the past summer's growth can be pruned to within 9 or 10 inches of the base in March. This produces new, strong shoots annually and keeps it looking shapely. Pruning isn't necessary, though, unless the branches are damaged by frost, which sometimes happens; they should then be cut back to the undamaged growth in March.
