A. cowanii is a 1823 heirloom prized for its sprays of glistening white floral umbels. Each 2"-wide umbel is comprised of dozens of white florets adorned with ivory-green anthers and pale green eyes (ovaries). Long-lasting, it is ideal in full sun to partial shade, in densely planted borders and rock gardens, forced pots and bouquets. Bulb size: 5 cm/up. May. 16" to 24". HZ: 6-9. (The size, or circumference, of Allium is measured around the widest part of the flower. From left to right, the flower would be about 1", while the circumference around the flower would be 2".) The Flowering Onions are rabbit-, rodent- and deer-resistant, and are seldom affected by disease. Adored by bees, butterflies and pollinators, Allium extend the spring flowering season, and are valuable cut and dried flowers.
