Description: This original antique print was published in England ca. 1840. Artists and Engravers: This plate by H. Alken. Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851) was the most famous member of the Alken family, who originated in Denmark. His name is almost synonymous with sporting art. Henry specialised in sporting subjects and undertook a huge amount of work for the Ackermanns. He was a versatile artist: a painter, etcher and aquatint engraver and he also worked in lithography. Henry Thomas Alken was a son of Samuel Alken (1756-1815). He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 on he was very productive. He is best remembered for his hunting prints.
