DESCRIPTION
Common Name(s): Black-eyed Susan Botanical Name: Rudbeckia hirta Cultivar: Sahara Type: Herbaceous Perennial Hardiness: Zones 4 to 9 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: Low Bloom Colors: Pink to red, caramel, coral-orange Bloom Period: Summer to frost Height: 14 to 20 inches Spacing: 24 inches Features: Showy blooms, good cut flower Precautions: None Known Description: A favorite late season perennial in an outstanding new color range that includes single and bi-color blooms in warm, sun-drenched shades. This single-stemmed variety produced very large, semi-double to fully double blooms over upright, compact plants with dark green foliage. Straight, sturdy stems and long-lasting flowers make these exceptional for cut-flower arrangements or in the perennial border. Flowers provide a late season nectar source for visiting bees and butterflies. Uses/Culture: Sunny beds and borders, cutting gardens, wildlife and meadow gardens. Flowers best in full sun with fertile soil that is moist but well-draining; will tolerate some shade and short periods of drought once established. Rudbeckia plants are fairly short-lived but self-seed reliably in ideal conditions. Plants are generally maintenance free but regular removal of spent flowers will help to prolong the blooms season. Not prone to any pests or disease. Apply a layer of mulch in late fall for over wintering in cooler climates. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 2-3 weeks under warm (55-60F), moist conditions. Sow as soon as the soil can be worked in spring anytime up until two months before autumn frost or indoors from late winter to early spring for earliest blooms.
