DESCRIPTION

Common Name(s): Bleeding Heart Botanical Name: Dicentra spectabilis Type: Perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 2 to 8 Light Requirements: Partial shade Water Requirements: High Bloom Colors: Rosy-pink Bloom Period: Spring Height: 18 to 38 inches Spacing: 24 inches Description: These vigorous growing plants are exquisite in the shade garden and will naturalize well in optimum conditions. Bushy, upright plants, with fleshy stems bear blue-green, divided leaves with wedge-shaped leaflets. From arching racemes dangle the heart shaped flowers made up of white inner petals extending from rose colored outer petals. Flowers are borne in spring and persist for several weeks. Uses/Culture: Woodland and shade gardens. Plants perform best in partial shade with a rich, consistently moist soil. If allowed to dry out, plants will go dormant and disappear by mid-June. Consistent watering will delay dormancy and keep foliage attractive into early summer in the South and into fall in the North. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 2-3 weeks under cool, moist conditions following a 4-6 week period of cold stratification. Fall sowing direct or to a cold-frame or unheated greenhouse is ideal.
