DESCRIPTION
Common Name(s): Heart-leaf bergenia, megasea, pigsqueak Botanical Name: Bergenia cordifolia Cultivar: Rose Form Type: Perennial Hardiness: Zones 3 to 8 Light: Partial to dappled shade Light Requirements: Partial sun to dappled shade Water Requirements: Average Bloom Colors: Deep pink Bloom Period: Spring Height: 12 to 18 inches Spacing: 12 to 18 inches Description: These evergreen plants are easy to grow from seed. They adapt well to a wide range of soil types and conditions but prefer a moist, humus rich soil with good drainage. Bergenia forms dense clumps of large glossy green leaves up to 10 inches in length and nearly as wide. The thick leathery leaves are lightly toothed and change to reddish purple at the close of the growing season. The common name can be attributed to the noise made when the shiny leaves are rubbed between fingers. Many rose-colored blooms are produced in dense panicles just above foliage on stout reddish-green stems from April into May. Uses: Edging for shady paths or walkways, woodland gardens, edging for shaded areas of beds and borders. Plants require protection from strong afternoon sun for success. They are tolerant of periods of drought once established but perform best in rich, consistently moist but well-drained soil. Germination Requirements: Germination occurs in 1-6 weeks under warm (75F), moist conditions; can be slow and erratic.
