Seeds per packet: 10 Description: Plants are formed of several levels of thick meaty pads that are born light green and change to blue-green with maturity. Each pad may measure up to 10 inches in length, 7 inches wide and 1/2 inch in thickness and remains evergreen throughout the winter, though they are inclined to yellow. In cooler climates plants tend to stay more compact, rarely exceeding 18 inches in height, and prostrate but in southern locations such as Florida plants may reach a mature height of 5 feet. The pads have several areolas from which grow one or two brown or grey spikes of variable length. Small deciduous leaves also form at the areoles but quickly fall off. Knob-like 2-inch diameter green buds form at the tops of pads before opening into papery 4-inch wide blooms. Entire bloom period occurs from June to July and lasts about a month, though individual blooms last only one day Uses/Culture: This native North American cactus is the only in the US hardy enough to grow as far north as New York.
