Common Name(s): Corsican Mint, Creeping Mint Botanical Name: Mentha requienii Type: Perennial Hardiness: USDA zones 5* to 9 Light Requirements: Partial sun to light shade Water Requirements: Average Bloom Color(s): Lavender-pink Bloom Period: Mid-summer Height: Under 6 inches Spacing: 6 to 12 inches Features: Aromatic foliage, withstands light foot traffic Precautions: None known Seeds per packet: 100 Description: Corsican mint is an attractive mat-forming perennial with highly aromatic foliage and tiny purple flowers. Though rarely offered by nurseries, this miniature member of the mint family is perfect for tucking in between rocks or pavers in shady areas where light foot traffic helps to release the peppermint-like scent. Small, rounded green leaves are produced along narrow spreading stems to form a dense ground cover under two inches in height and a foot or more wide. Evergreen in warm climates. Uses/Culture: Tea, herb and medicinal gardens, containers, foliage plant, naturalizing, ground cover. Performs best in full sun to partial shade and rich, evenly moist, but well-draining soil, but prefers some afternoon shade in warm climates. Adapts well to a variety of soil conditions but resents dry soils and periods of drought. Self seeds reliably; *north of zone 6 performs as a self-seeding annual. Germination requirements: Germinates best under cool (55-65F), moist conditions. Sow direct, to a cold frame or unheated greenhouse while temperatures are still cool in spring. Warmer temperatures may inhibit results.
