DESCRIPTION
From 1907 to 1915 George Bellows executed a series of paintings of New York under snowfall, of which this busy composite of Midtown Manhattan is an outstanding example. Its razzmatazz of man-made geometries and bustling crowds suggests a hungry machine, subsuming nature-and humanity-to its will. There is no corner in which to hide. The new-fallen snow is easily shoved aside, trodden down by the march of commerce. At the center of the composition, a wagon brings fresh stone or hay from the countryside-more material to feed the beast.
