DESCRIPTION
The Grand Fir is an evergreen conifer which is a valuable commercial timber species even though its wood is much weaker than over species. Its dark green needles are short and flat and are arranged on opposite sides of the branch. The cones grow upright on the very top branches of the tree and give the tree and interesting appearance when the cones are ripe. Grand Firs grow anywhere from stream bottoms on up to middle elevation slopes in dry to moist, deep soils. Small thickets of the Grand Fir provides good hiding cover for wildlife and valuable thermal cover. The Grand Fir's wood is used from pulp and light uses. The Grand Fir is also a very popular Christmas tree and large areas are planted specifically for that purpose The Grand Fir is an attractive evergreen with very shiny dark needles. It is often thickly branched and has a very nice shape. Grand Firs can get quite large, so power lines need to be taken into account when planting this tree. It grows best in deep, rich soils, full sun or partial shade and becomes drought tolerant once established. The Grand Fir can reach heights of up to 200 feet
