Compound dark green leaves and hollow stems are often mistaken for bamboo, which lead to the common name, 'heavenly bamboo' though Nandina actually belongs to the barberry family. Small white flowers are produced in impressive upright terminal clusters in spring. Blooms are replaced by loose clusters of red berries which persist on the plant for several months until eventually dispersed by visiting birds (northern cardinals, American robin, northern mockingbirds, cedar waxwings) and mammals. Through the latter part of the season, the stems and leaves become intensely bronzed with hues of crimson, copper, magenta, chartreuse, and deep purple. Plants are evergreen in zones 8-10, but leaves will drop should temperatures persist below about 10F. Uses/Culture: Accent plant (form, color), wildlife gardens, large patio containers, background planting for perennial beds and borders, grouped in shrub borders, covering for large expanse of wall or unsightly fence. Will tolerate a wide range of soil and lighting conditions but performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist, humus-rich soil; will tolerate full shade. Germination requirements: Germination begins in 6 to 8 weeks under warm (68F), moist conditions, but dormant seeds may not germinate until two cold periods stimulate stages of embryo development. Do not discard prematurely.
