DESCRIPTION
LAVENDER VERA-TRUE LAVENDER, an herb, botanically named Lavandula Angustifolia lavender species is the most recommended and valued of all lavenders because of the high quality oil produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfumes and cosmetics. The species' medicinal properties include everything from alleviating stress, headaches and insomnia to reducing fevers. Its flowering period is from mid-June to late July. SOWING: Lavender can be started any time of year, in late fall in protected cold frames, outdoors or indoors at any time, but at least 12 weeks prior to warm weather season. Prior to sowing, put the seeds through a process called "cold stratifying." In this process, seeds should be placed in a sealable plastic bag filled with moist soil. Use a commercial soil specially formulated for starting seeds. Place the plastic bag with the soil and seeds inside the refrigerator and allow it to sit for three weeks. Fill trays, cells or peat pots with a high quality pre-moistened seed starting mixture. Broadcast seeds evenly over the top of the soil. Press seeds into soil and cover VERY thinly with seed starting mixture as seeds need exposure to light to germinate. Using a heat mat under trays with overhead growing lights works very well for germination. Keep the growing medium moist (not saturated). Saturation causes damping off. Lavender can take two weeks to one month to sprout. Transplant seedlings after several sets of leaves have appeared. Keep lavender growing to at least 3 inches in size before final transplant.
