DESCRIPTION

HOSTA STEARN BLUE PLANTAIN LILY is the ideal plant for shade. It is often planted in mass or in rings under trees, with other shade loving companion plants. Hosta is easy to start from seed indoors. When sown in late summer or fall they are big and sturdy enough to transplant outdoors in the spring after the last frost. It is one of the most rewarding plants to sow and propagate. . Remember to NOT discard the uglier seedlings. We have had the most beautiful swans (plants) mature from the ugly ducklings. So we do not advise culling. We advise patience, keeping every seedling. You will be pleasantly surprised. SOWING INDOORS: Use a clean seed starting mix/growing medium pre-moistened prior to sowing seeds. Soil mediums with peat work very well. Sprinkle seeds evenly pressing well into growing medium and covering thinly or not at all as Hosta seed needs light to germinate. A comfortable house temperature between 60F - 70F is perfect for Hosta seeds to sprout. You may use heat mats under plant cells if you like, using plant lights overhead for much needed light. They tend to grow faster this way. Keep the soil moist but not saturated. The seeds will sprout within 8 - 25 days. Hostas prefer water from the bottom, not the top. Continue to transplant to larger pots if needed as they continue to grow indoors ensuring pots are adequate for bottom watering. Hosta doesn't mind the transplanting. Harden off plants to acclimatize to outdoor temps prior to planting outdoors. Plants should be spaced 14 inches apart. If the outdoor planted area dries out, water regularly to achieve adequate moisture. Some gardeners mildly stratify seeds prior to sowing by putting seeds in a cup of water in the refrigerator for 2 weeks. Many gardeners who routinely plant perennials use this method for Hosta. Store Hosta seeds in a very cool place, refrigerator or freezer if not planted immediately. THIS LISTING IS FOR A PACKET OF SEEDS
