John Lee Hooker Four-String Cigar Box Guitar
DESCRIPTION
This is a hand built in the U.S.A., four- string cigar box guitar. It is decorated with an original art poster by the Farrago Factory that is a work of historical fiction. Designed in the traditional letter press style, this was the common and economic way in the 1950's for venues to advertise their events. Although this image is our own creation, the legendary blues musician, John Lee Hooker made many appearances at The Apex Bar in the 1950's. The bar is still open and was part of the famed Paradise Valley district near downtown Detroit. -This instrument is built with a Punch brand cigar box. The neck is maple, fretted on an oak fretboard. It has a bolt bridge, bolt nut, strap buttons, chrome tuners, corners and sound holes. The scale is 25 inches (the distance between the nut and the bridge) and is tuned to open G (DGBD). It may also be tuned to open E. It has a magnetic pickup and volume control, so plug it into an amp and turn it up! -The four-string cigar box guitar (and three-string cbg) grew out of a tradition of homemade instruments made by people with little money. An instrument of hard times, people used ingenuity to create guitars out of found or scavenged materials. Many early blues and country musicians played on instruments like these. Lately, there's been a resurgence of interest in cigar box guitars. People wanting to connect to a more roots feeling of blues, country or rock styles find these instruments a great way to recreate those sounds. They also look good hanging on a wall! -This guitar is a hand made folk art instrument built by musician Gary Reichel and has some imperfections to fit in with the spirit and tradition of the cigar box guitar. It can have a country, blues or rock feel to it and is easy and fun to play!
