Lactic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid, is derived from sour milk and is used for the mildest, most gentle of chemical peels. A lactic acid peel works like a glycolic acid peel, but it is much more gentle on the skin. Lactic acid functions as an exfoliant on the skin. Its acid helps dissolve the glue-like substance that binds the outermost surface skin cells together, so that old skin cells are sloughed off to reveal fresher skin cells underneath. A lactic acid peel does not come with the skin irritation or recovery time of deeper chemical peels, and it is therefore a good choice for people with sensitive skin or who have rosacea. It is also free of risks or complications, making it a good choice for those new to chemical peels.Because a lactic acid peel is so gentle, results are not as intense as with other chemical peels. A series of up to eight sessions may be required to achieve full results, with "maintenance" lactic peel treatments thereafter. Step 1: Clean face and neck thoroughly. Step 2: Prepare skin with an alcohol/water solution (50/50 mixture). Step 3: Apply peel to face and neck area. Gently glide cotton ball unto skin, applying more pressure on areas that need added exfoliation. Step 4: Allow acid to sit on skin for 2-3 minutes. Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with warm water. If needed, use neutralizing solution to neutralize acid. This step is only necessary if you feel that the acid is too strong for your skin. Otherwise, rinsing thoroughly with warm water should suffice. Step 6: Apply a good skin hydrating, healing moisturizer unto treated area.
