Liberty Hops are descendant of the noble Hallertau Mittelfruh variety and are characterized by a spicy, sweet aroma that is grassy and haylike. It is a mild and refined hop with exceptional character. The Liberty hop variety came about in 1983 as part of the same agricultural program that produced its half-sister hop varieties of Crystal, Mt. Hood, and Ultra. Liberty is a triploid daughter of Hallertau Mittelfrüh and is a downy mildew-resistant plant. Of the four hop varieties derived from Hallertau Mittelfruh, it is considered to most closely resemble its mother. Designed as a substitute for Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Liberty makes an excellent US-made stand-in for European noble hops in German pils, Bavarian-style lagers, Kolsch, Hefeweizen, Biere de Garde, and Belgian ales.
