DESCRIPTION
The backdrop to this image is the President's Box at Ford's Theatre. Here you see the scene of the crime where John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln. Surrounding the crime scene are all ten of the conspirators in the case. On the top row are the individuals that were hanged on July 7th, 1865. For their part Mary Surratt, George Atzerodt, Lewis Powell (aka Payne) and David Herold were convicted in a military court and hanged. On the second row are the individuals that were not sentenced - John Wilkes Booth, who was killed by Boston Corbett on April 26, 1865 and John Surratt, Jr. who, unlike his mother who was hanged, managed to escape first to Canada and then to Europe where he worked for a time as a Papal guard. After being caught and returned to the U.S. he was tried in a civilian court. With the exception of Michael O'Laughlen, who died while in prison, the rest where pardoned by President Andrew Johnson and returned to civilian life. This is a powerful and moving poster that is a must have for anyone with an interest in the Lincoln Assassination.History In Full Color
