Burnton under Ash is a small but fairly busy market town.

Burnton Barnstormers (the local amateur dramatics society) are preparing to stage their fifteenth annual production, a musical comedy called "A Peek At Peking".

The auditions are over, the cast selected. They are about to start the first rehearsal when the body of the show's director, local bank manager Red E Cash, is discovered covered in blood, face down in a props basket with a gaping wound on his head.

All the members are gathered in the green room. Two questions have to be answered. What has happened here? And how will the show go on?
