Common Name(s): Pearl bluebush Botanical Name: Maireana sedifolia Type: Succulent shrub Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11 Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade Water Requirements: Low Bloom Color(s): Pink to brown, insignificant Bloom Period: Seasonally Height: 4 to 5 feet, rarely 6 feet Spacing: 48 to 60 inches Features: Attractive foliage, fall and winter interest Precautions: None known Description: These unique looking shrubs are native to arid and semi-arid regions of South Australia and make an interesting accent planting for use in hot, sunny well-drained sites. Grown primarily for the near-white foliage; small papery blooms are pale pink to brown and born in pairs year-round, but are not noteworthy. Pearl Bluebush creates a striking display with small succulent leaves crowded tightly over upright branches. They naturally grow with the bulk of branches towards the outside giving them a somewhat awkward appearance; they will handle being pruned into a more desirable shape if their peculiarity is not appreciated. They are especially attractive used in contrast with dark foliage plants. Cuttings make an attractive and long lasting addition to cut flower arrangements. Uses/Culture: Specimen, accent (texture, color), xeri-scaping, . Plants excel in sunny, hot, dry areas and alkaline soils, both heavy and well-drained, but resents wet soils. Will tolerate some shade, but can get lanky in too much shade. Germination requirements: Germination occurs in 7-14 days under warm, (70-85F), moist conditions. Scarify prior to sowing. Use of giberellic acid (GA-3) has shown to improve germination results.
