However, when happy in their surroundings, meconopsis poppies create a breathtaking display. This species, though uncommon to the nursery trade, is among the least finicky of the genus and will take warmer summers than most. Solitary, pendulous, lipstick-red blooms are held on numerous slender stems from May to June. Foliage consists of a basal roseette of pubescent green lanceolate leaves. These are monocarpic plants which bloom in their first or second season when started from seed; collect seed annually. Uses/Culture: Mass planting, shady beds and borders, stream banks and moist woodland margins. Plant in partial to light shade with consistently moist but well-draining soil for best performance; meconopsis is resentful of dry soils and extended periods of drought. Germination requirements: Seeds require a period of cold stratification prior to germination. Sow outdoors in late fall or winter for germination in spring, or place in a moist papertowel in the refrigerator prior to planting. Even under ideal conditions, germination can be slow and some seeds may not germinate until the following season.
