Vihara House 'Home Spirit Guide' Carved Teak Wood Sculpture Buddhist
DESCRIPTION
Jamras Thapinta carves an ornate spirit house from the rich, noble grain of teak wood.
It is a Thai custom to place a guardian spirit house or san phra poom in the front of a home.
Thapinta shapes the mystical abode like a Buddhist vihara, featuring overlapping roofs forming elegant naban (gables), from which the cho fa (elongated triangular finials) rise.
Cascading down from these are the decorative leaf forms on the bargeboards called bai raka, which lead to the side hang hong finials, shaped like the tails of wild swans.
The house welcomes a phra poom (guardian spirit) who will guard against mean spirits or enemies who might threaten the family or their home.
It is said to bring luck, happiness, accomplishment and security to all.
