DESCRIPTION

This three-string license plate guitar is built with a 1968 West Virginia license plate. It has chrome tuners, bolt nut, bolt bridge, hinge tailpiece, strap buttons and is tuned to open E (E B E). It may also be tuned to an open G or open D. The scale is 25" (distance between the nut and bridge), it has a maple neck and is fretted on an oak fretboard. The body is built with cleaned, sanded and stained pallet wood. It is an electric guitar with a single coil pickup and volume control, so plug it into an amplifier! - - The license plate guitar, like the three-string cigar box guitar grew out of a tradition of homemade instruments made by people with little money. An instrument of hard times, people used ingenuity to create guitars out of found or scavenged materials. Many early blues and country musicians played on instruments like these. Lately, there has been a resurgence of interest in license plate and cigar box guitars. People wanting to connect to a more roots sound of blues, country or rock styles, find these instruments a great way to recreate those sounds. It also looks great hanging on a wall! - - This guitar is a handmade instrument built by musician Gary Reichel and has some imperfections to fit in with the spirit and folk art tradition of the license plate and cigar box guitar. It can have a country, blues or rock feel to it and is easy and fun to play!
