COLUMBINE DWARF MIX COLOUR - 300 Seeds - Aquilegia Vulgaris
DESCRIPTION
- These delicate nodding blossoms are native to Europe; they grow wild throughout much of northern Europe, especially abundant due to their reseeding habit. Legend has it that these wildflowers grew in the footsteps of the virgin Mary on her journey to the house of Elizabeth; medieval paintings sometimes included this flower to signify the Holy Spirit, because of the plant's association with doves.
- The name "columbine" is derived from the Latin "columba," or dove, since an upside down columbine bloom looks like a circle of doves around a fountain. The Latin genus name "Aquilegia" means "eagle," a reference to the spikes on the back of the flower that resemble an eagle's talons.
- Season: Perennial Sowing: February to June / September to October. Blooms Time: June to July Environment: Full sun to partial sun Water: Medium Othes: Attractive to Hummingbirds Ideal for: Borders, rock gardens, cottage gardens, open shade gardens, woodland gardens or naturalized areas.
- Sowing Direct: Rake the seeds and cover with a small amount of soil. The seeds will germinate by the following spring. Aquilegias will self-sow into choice plants, so only sprinkle the seeds where it will not matter.
- Sowing Indoors: Sow in pots or tray. Keep at 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged.
