Seeds per packet: About 15 Description: This nearly leafless peculiarity is a highly drought tolerant species indigenous to the southwestern United States where it inhabits dry, sandy desert regions of Arizona and southern California. With ash-gray branches that form a dense thicket and small (to 1/2" long) gray leaves that appear with the winter rains before dispersing in early spring, the tree could easily be mistaken for a billow of smoke. Just when the stark, skeletal structure may incline some to believe the plant has expired, flower buds spread over the branches throughout April and May. By early summer, an abundance of blue-violet, pea-like blooms with bright orange anthers are held in clusters, often making the entire tree appear to be covered in a blue haze. Desert smoke tree is a unique specimen for frost free areas. Dalea is simple to grow from seed and needs no irrigation once established. Uses/Culture: Back of arid beds and borders, accent planting (color, texture), specimen tree, grouped for hedging or privacy screen, native plant gardens, cactus and succulent gardens, wildlife gardens. Performs best in full sun and average to poor, sharply-drained soil. Extremely heat and drought tolerant once established. Prune as needed to enhance natural form and texture. Germination requirements: Germinates in about a week under warm (70-77F), moist conditions. Scarify and soak seed overnight prior to sowing to hasten germination.
