This is a beautiful polished ammonite fossil. It measures approximately 7 1/2 inches at the widest point. This fossil was found in Madagascar and dates back to about 120 million years ago. Ammonites were prehistoric marine creatures related to the modern day cuttlefish, squid, and octopus family. Ammonites are called cephalopods because their heads and tentacles protruded out of the same opening; they grew by building larger chambers onto their shells. Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period, 400 million years ago, and went extinct during the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago.
