AMMONITE Fossils Polished Pair 3 1/2 inches Madagascar #2441 11o
DESCRIPTION
This is a pair of polished ammonite fossils. Each measures approximately 3 1/2 inches at the widest point. These are a matched pair, meaning both halves are from the same animal - it was simply cut in half. These fossils were found in Madagascar and date back to about 120 million years ago. Ammonites were prehistoric marine creatures related to the modern day cuttlefish, squid, and octopus family. Ammonites are called cephalopods because their heads and tentacles protruded out of the same opening; they grew by building larger chambers onto their shells. Ammonites first appeared during the Devonian period, 400 million years ago, and went extinct during the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago.
