This is a polished Schloenbachia Ammonite fossil. This particular specimen measures 9 1/2 inches in length and 7 1/2 inches in height. It weighs 8 pounds 11 ounces. Ammonites were prehistoric marine creatures related to the modern day cuttlefish, squid, and octopus family. Ammonites are called cephalopods because their heads and tentacles protruded out of the same opening; they grew by building larger chambers onto their shells. This ammonite fossil was found in Morocco, North Africa and dates back to the Upper Cretaceous time period, approximately 100 million years ago.
