CLEOME SPIDER FLOWER is a tall plant with huge flowers. They are often gawked at because the blossoms are large and they stand out beautifully in the garden. Cleomes are at their finest growing in a full sun (6 hours) location, in fertile, well-draining soil, but are tolerant of a wide range of soil types. Plant in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Space them 1 to 2 feet apart in groups of 5 or more. SOWING: Prior to sowing seed, stratify the seeds in the refrigerator. Put seeds in a plastic zipped bag with moist seed starting mix in the fridge for 2 weeks then out of the fridge for 1 week, alternating the process for 6 weeks prior to sowing. Prepare the soil for planting. If planting the seeds outdoors, remove any weeds or debris from the soil. Sow seeds approximately 1 to 3 inches apart outside, or 1 inch apart indoors in prepared pots or cells. Press seed firmly into soil and very lightly cover or do not cover with soil as seeds need light to germinate. Keep your growing medium or soil moist but avoid flooding the soil. When planting indoors, make sure the containers have access to bright light or an overhead plant growing light every day. Cleome plants germinate in approximately 10 - 30 days. They may sprout in intervals, not sprouting all at the same time. Wait until the sprouted cleome plants are 1 to 2 inches tall, and then thin them so there is around 1 to 1 1/2 inch of space between the plants. Transplant any cleome plants you have started indoors to an outdoor location once the danger of frost has passed. Continue to water plants, as needed.
