DESCRIPTION
NIGELLA LOVE IN A MIST MIX is a popular cool weather annual that features solitary blue, pink and white flowers (to 1 1/2" wide) atop stems clad with finely-cut, thread-like leaves. Each solitary flower appears to sit on a bed of lacy (and misty) foliage, hence the common name, Love in a Mist. SOWING: Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Sow seed in the garden, very early spring, when temps are still cold, as soon as the ground can be worked. Broadcast seeds, pressing firmly onto surface covering only with soil the thickness of the seed as Nigella seed needs light to germinate Seeds may also be sown in the cool of fall and winter in pots and protected beds. After first crop, successive sowings can be done every 3 - 4 weeks until mid-summer. Seed may also be started indoors about 6 - 8 weeks prior to last spring frost date, but plants dislike transplanting and results can be disappointing. Stratification is required when sowing seed indoors or in the warmer temps of late spring and summer. Moist cool treatment breaks the dormancy of the seed. Stratify seeds in seed starting mix in a zipped up plastic bag alternating 2 weeks in the fridge and 1 week out for 6 weeks prior to sowing. The established plants like consistent moisture. Deadheading spent flowers will extend bloom period, but will also prevent development of the attractive post-bloom seed pods. Plants will self - seed in the garden. Remove Seed pods to prevent spreading or save them in the refrigerator and plant them out, especially in zones that do not receive a cold winter.
