At the Battle of Pavia in 1525, Georg von Frundsberg won his most famous victory as a Landsknecht commander. This mounted figure represents a flag bearer of the Landsknechts primary employer: The Holy Roman Empire. This military miniature is part of the Pavia command group from First Legion, along with REN014-REN017. It was at the Battle of Pavia that von Fundsberg captured the French King, effectively ensuring Habsburg rule of Italy for the next 200 years. The Renaissance era spanned the 14th-17th Centuries, during which art, science, exploration, and literature made a great resurgence. Not all was civilized however, as the great continental powers of Europe bloodily vied for control of the continent; their militaries warred with each other. Gunpowder and cannon became more reliable, and less apt to explode unexpectedly. Heavy cavalry and foot soldiers were the most common troops, and the pike and musket were the most common armaments in Renaissance armies. It is often referred to as the "Age of Pike and Shot" for this reason.
