First Legion REN006 German Landsknecht with Pike
DESCRIPTION
The 14th-17th Centuries are historically known as the Renaissance. During this time there was resurgence in art, science, exploration, and literature. The Renaissance wasn't all strides forward, as the great European powers vied for dominance of the continent and their militaries came into conflict. The use of gunpowder and cannon became commonplace, alongside heavy cavalry and foot soldiers. As such, it is typically referred to as the "Age of Pike and Shot" as the pike and musket were the most common weapon in army formations. First Legion will explore this interesting period of history extensively, and launched the REN range with the Battle of Pavia in 1525. It was the deciding battle of the Italian Wars between France and the Spanish Empire, which resulted in Spanish rule of the Italian States for the next two centuries. REN001-REN030 are stunningly detailed, hand painted military miniatures that cover the colorful mercenaries from Germany, called Landsknechts. Pike squares were also used by the Swiss mercenaries of the time, and these figures could stand in for them as well. The mercenary seen here holds his pike at "port" to avoid injuring the front rank of a pike square.
